Summer brings many opportunities for fun outdoor activities like swimming, or hiking. Here are some tips on staying safe during your summer adventures:
Drink up. The single most important thing to remember for the hotter months is to remain hydrated with water, especially if you are engaging in physical activities like hiking or walking. If you are feeling a headache, or unwell while in the sun, you might be dehydrated. But beware, drinks like iced coffee and alcohol may taste refreshing but will actually dehydrate you, so make sure you are consuming water.
Protect your ears. Whenever you swim, there is a possibility of getting a common infection known as Swimmer’s Ear. Investing in ear plugs or carefully drying your ears after a swim are two ways to protect yourself from this.
Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen helps protect your largest organ, your skin! It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Reduce your risk of skin cancer by ensuring you use sunscreen, even when it is cloudy outside. Make sure to reapply every few hours according to your sunscreen’s directions.
