Aside from keeping up with your classes, staying within budget as an international student is in the top 5 of most stressful things to experience while in college. Here are some tips and ideas on how you can stay within budget while getting through the semester.
1. Earn and Learn: One of the ways to get some extra money is working. On-campus jobs and even tutoring your fellow students can go a long way. Check your career services office, speak to your international student advisor or even stop by different departments like the library or bookstore to see if there are any job opportunities.
2. Budgeting: Sometimes, the best way to stay within budget is to grab a pen and paper and write it all out. Make a list of all the monthly expenses that you have and the estimated amount for each. Look over these expenses and see which ones you can avoid having and come with creative ways to cut cost. For example, use coupons for discounts on purchases.
3. Mindful Credit: A credit card is one of the quickest ways to get yourself into debt. If you absolutely need a credit card, be mindful of how and when you use your credit card. Since many international students are not earning enough income to keep up with credit card expenses, try sticking with one credit card and using it only when necessary.
4.Save, save and save: Whether it is $5 or $10, nothing is better than saving a little of your money. Open a student savings or checking account that has zero fees. A little saving can go a long way especially when you really need it.
