Summer break is approaching, and you can finally take a moment to relax! Everyone has different plans and goals for taking advantage of the extra time before the Fall semester begins. Some international students may return to their home country or travel to different countries. Others may stay in the U.S. over the summer to work, take summer courses, or just relax and explore. If you are staying in the U.S. this summer, we have prepared tips to make the most out of your summer vacation no matter what you are doing!
Summer Courses

Taking summer courses is a great way for international students to earn extra credits, makeup courses, pursue graduating early, or boost your GPA. There are many benefits to taking summer courses, however, it is important to understand what to expect before enrolling. For example, summer courses can range from 4, 6, or 10-week terms (depending on your school) and coursework will have to be completed in a much shorter period. In addition, the classroom sizes are typically smaller. This can give your professor the chance to better get to know how you are as a student.
Here are 3 tips to help you when taking summer courses:
- Setup your schedule- When taking summer courses, it is important to look at all your other summer commitments. Do not commit to anything if you are going to have to miss class. Summer classes can be as short as 4 weeks, so missing one class can have a negative effect on your grades. Make sure your summer class is your top priority!
- Take detailed notes- As mentioned previously, since summer classes run on a tight schedule, your professor will cover more course material for each class. Taking notes will help you stay on track with the class, here’s some tips on how to take detailed notes.
- Take advantage of all your resources- If you are struggling with your summer classes, make sure to take advantage of your school’s resources. The first person you should go to is your professor. Visit office hours, ask to meet after class, or send them an email. Next, ask your classmates. They may be able to explain the material in a simpler way for you to better understand it.

Job/ Internship

One of the benefits of being an F1 international student in the U.S. is work permission. For students not taking summer courses, having a summer job is the best way to earn extra cash! If on-campus jobs are available, you will be able to work up to 40 hours per week. Your school should have more job opportunities available now that most students have left campus. Check with the career services office or your school’s career website for job openings.
For international students who want to train, intern, or work this summer, you will have to speak with your designated school official (DSO). This is because it is illegal to work in the U.S. without authorization. Your DSO will help make sure you are following the rules and maintaining your student status. You can choose summer training or work opportunities depending on what type of authorization you have or apply for. For more information, check out our blog post!
