The transition to college comes with learning curves for all. As international students, you are acclimating to adulthood and an entirely new culture. Below, we’ve created a guide for campus resources that are available to make your time in college easier. From clubs to tutoring and career services, this blog will answer the questions you have when seeking support in all areas of your life! Utilizing these resources at your university will not only boost your grades, social life, career prospects, and more; but help you get full use of your college experience (and tuition)!
Q: Where can I go for any international student inquiries?
A: Visit your International Student Office and Advisors!
If you have not familiarized yourself with the international student office yet, now is a great time as ever to connect with your advisors! This office will typically be your first and foremost resource for any support as an international student. They are here to meet your individual academic, social, and additional needs!
Q: I need more academic support. What are my options?
A: If you need help with a specific class, go to office hours!
Professors and TAs schedule time outside of class to meet with students; this is known as office hours. This time allows space for students with unanswered questions or to further discuss class material. Although office hours aren’t usually required attendance, this is your window of opportunity to understand the material better, boost your grade, and get to know your professor.
If you’re in a large lecture, office hours give your professors/TAs a chance to learn your name! Your professors have a mountain of knowledge and are mostly willing to share their experiences—getting to know them will only help you succeed!
A2: If you want to improve your reading, writing, and math skills, take a trip to the tutoring centers!
If you need other academic support, your school’s tutoring center will offer just that. Whether you want to become a stronger writer, improve your math skills, or other help; these centers provide comprehensive services for students—free of charge. You should not wait until failing a class to utilize the tutoring center. These centers allow you to improve your skills in critical reading, academic writing, or math tutoring. Some schools have specific centers for subjects, such as a math/STEM center, reading/writing center, or language center to better support you—take advantage of these free services!
A3: To stay on track to graduate, schedule an appointment with your academic advisor!
Your academic counselor advises you on your educational career. They are here to keep you on time to graduate. This may include advice on planning your schedule, what classes to take, how many to take per semester, post-graduate career choices, financial aid assistance, and any issues you may have in your academic journey. For many students, meeting with your counselor before registering for classes each semester ensures you are on the right path to graduate!
Q: I’m writing a research paper. Where can I get resources?
A: Utilize your library!
Your school’s library contains many academic resources at your disposal. Not only are there an array of books, journals, and leisurely text but you also have access to research databases, reserves, e-books, computers/technology, research rooms and spaces, and more. JSTOR is one of the most popular digital libraries which you can access through your school’s email.
Q: Do I have any technology resources from my college?
A: Yes, check your school’s website for software resources!
Many universities provide access to software resources at no additional charge. These software programs make your academic studies easier and come as a great perk for being in school. Students and educators are eligible for Office 365 Education for free—all you need is your school’s email address. Your school may offer other software products, applications, and services such as Adobe CC, Final Cut Pro, McAfee, XFINITY On Campus, and more. Visit your school’s website for a complete list as this may vary.
For other IT support, visit your school’s IT support service desk or website.
Q: I need an internship/job, where do I start?
A: Visit the Career Center!
The career center at your school will help you find the perfect fit! Many centers offer workshops, advice, and appointments for all things related to your future or present career. This includes finding opportunities, polishing your resume, and guiding you through the interview processes.
Q: I want to be more involved in student life. Where’s a great place to start?
A: Join clubs, Greek life, or other student organizations!
Joining student clubs and organizations at your school brings you closer to the community and provides an opportunity to meet diverse and alike people. There are many benefits to being a part of these student-run communities such as personal and professional growth. This will also help you expand your social network and find new passions or hobbies. Check out our blog for more info on expanding your social network.
A2: To stay active, visit your fitness/recreation center or join intramural activities!
If your school has a fitness or recreation center, this is a great place to stay active at no cost! Getting involved in intramural sports and activities also allows you to have fun and get moving. There is an activity for everyone’s abilities and needs and another great way to make friends!
Q: What are my health resources while at school?
A: Your school’s student health center provides medical services!
Q: What resources do I have for my mental health?
A: Visit your school’s website for mental health services!
Taking care of your mental health is important in college. Many campuses have a wide variety of mental health resources for students seeking support. This may include on-campus counseling services, crisis text lines, peer counseling, and centers to destress. Visit your school’s website for info on what your school may offer.
